Best VPN for China 2018

People often ask me “What VPN do you use?“, “What is the best VPN for China?” or “What is a reliable VPN for China?“.

And let’s be honest, who likes answering the same questions over and over again?

So I made this handy guide!

What's So Special about 2018?

Lots of people have been worrying about what exactly the Chinese government have planned for 2018. News has come out about their intentions to block all VPNs in China completely.

Whilst updates and information (as well as misinformation) has come out sporadically, no one is really sure what exactly will happen in February when VPNs are scheduled to be blocked. Well, except maybe the Chinese Communist party themselves.

The following VPNs have either confirmed that they should still be able to circumnavigate the block or are confident in their ability to do so.

So, Which is the Best VPN for China in 2018?

If you are thinking of moving to China in 2018 for work or travel then you may have come across people mentioning the need for a VPN. China is notorious for blocking access to many websites that people from western countries take for granted. If you are a regular user of Facebook, Twitter, Google services (including search and email!) then you are going to want to download a VPN before you come. Full list of blocked websites here – some may surprise you!

I wrote about making a decision about whether or not you need a VPN in China before but with the list of blocked websites actually growing, it is becoming more and more important to have a reliable source to communicate with the rest of the world.

Here are my picks for the best VPN in China for 2018:

Best VPN for China Overall - Vypr VPN

VyprVPN is the VPN I have been using for the 3 years I have been in China with almost zero interruption to service. I have recommended this VPN since i started using it due to its effective service and easy to use app for computer and phone.

Pros:

  • Great speed
  • Easy to use app and software
  • Client is configurable
  • Offers a free trial before you commit
  • Over 70 server locations in different countries

Cons:

  • Minimal logging
  • No refunds once the trial is over
  • Not ideal for people who plan on torrenting/downloading as it is against the terms of use

Best VPN for China for Loading Speeds - Express VPN

ExpressVPN lives up to its name and is known for its speed and efficiency. It has a huge range of servers to switch between if any are running slowly for whatever reason. Express is also the most common VPN I have seen China expats use so the company must be doing something right.

Pros:

  • The ‘world’s fastest VPN’
  • A 30 day money back guarantee
  • Works on mobile and computer
  • Huge range of servers and locations
  • Minimal logging (connection only, not activity)

Cons:

  • No free trial
  • By no means the cheapest VPN

Best VPN for China for Price - Pure VPN

PureVPN, in my opinion, is the choice for those on a budget. It is effective and gets the job done but there is nothing overly special about it. Its the cheap, no frills option for those that don’t want to spend too much.

Pros:

  • Cheap but functional VPN
  • Lots of additional features
  • A mobile and desktop app
  • Bigger discount the longer you sign up for

Cons:

  • No free trial
  • Some session logging
  • Restrictions on money back guarantee
  • I had some minor connection problems whilst using it on the desktop personally

If you are looking for a budget VPN that can still give you access to the sites you miss sign up to PureVPN here!

Best China focused VPN - PandaPow

The whole premise of PandaPow VPN is that it is specifically geared towards avoiding and getting around ‘The Great Firewall of China’. If for some reason PandaPow doesn’t work in China anymore then its pretty much game over for this company. Thinking of buy a PandaPow VPN subscription as like a ‘mutually assured destruction’ kind of a deal.

Pros:

  • Completely focused on providing a VPN for China
  • Basic but effective software
  • Decent speeds under speed tests

Cons:

  • Possibility of terminating your account if you download copyrighted material
  • Interface could be improved to be more attractive or user friendly
  • Uses a lot of battery in the android app (possibly on iOS app too)

If you want a VPN that is specifically designed to combat the Chinese ‘Great Firewall’ then sign up to PandaPow here!

Note to Readers: Some of the links above are affiliate links. I chose which VPNs I have either used personally or have colleagues and friends that use without major problems or inconvenience. After writing this post I then thought to apply to see if any of the VPN websites had an affiliate program. Some of the discounts are only available to affiliates, so it seems like a win-win situation for all of us!
